Day Two! Historical Movements

Thursday, August 2, 2012

Here is proof that history is much more fun on the road!!!  Sitting in a class and memorizing dates with events...Boring!

On our drive, we made a quick, unexpected pit stop to Martin's Cove!  I almost ran into the back of our van (my mom driving it) as she made a sudden turn.  We had no idea that this LDS historical site was on our route!

The actual ranch is called The Sun Ranch. Here you can take a hike to Martin's Cove or Devil's Gate, or stay at the ranch for a tour. Though, it was unplanned we were able to stay for a bit and learn even more about the pioneers!

This is a replica of what a handcart would have looked like.  If you look closely, the wheels were made from fresh cut, green wood.  The wraps surrounding, holding the wheels together were animal tissue.  At one point, during the treacherous trek the pioneers ran out of food and had to unwrap the wheels.  They boiled the tissue twice before chewing on it just to get some nutrients!

All in all, this was a beautiful, spiritual experience!

Let's further our historical fun by going to Mount Rushmore!

I have seen tons of pictures of this monument, but until you put yourself here...It's Amazing!  My oldest daughter, was very specific in wanting pictures of Teddy!  Of course, he was the most difficult one to take images of!  Yet, mission accomplished!

I only expected a huge granite carving in the mountain side, but it was neat to see a museum with a history and casts.

This is a model that the artist used to carve the actual mountain.  This is how the mountain was going to look, but because of the lack of granite in the mountain and the artist dying, the final production was stopped.

Such a powerful, spiritual day!  Gaining an understanding of our forefathers during both historical sites brought humbling feelings. It got me thinking about my own legacy.
