Getting caught up: Weeks 5 & 6!

Sunday, October 7, 2012
First off, sorry that I missed my post last week.  I was updating my computer.  It took more time than expected...

Let's take some time to get caught up on all the fun filled events!

Harrisonburg is getting more cold.  In fact, here is a picture of a recent morning, taken from our front porch:

I am learning that when it says '30%' for rain, its actually 90%!

Can't forget this sweet girl!  Clara Kaye turned 1!!!

Her first time opening presents! We set the present in front of her and she didn't know what to do at first. Once we showed her how to tear the wrapping paper she had a ball!

Abby made her a fun caterpillar out of cupcakes!  Coconut grass and Oreo dirt.

Which she thoroughly enjoyed!  It's tradition to give our children a piece of cake on their first birthday and just let 'em go at it! That little fist was clenched tight as if we were going to steal her cake!!!

Clara is a sweet and patient little girl!  Just a calm little one, filled with smiles!

Regarding my other little girls, Hannah's elementary school had an open house.  She was super excited to show us everything!  She even had some art work hanging in the hallway for everyone to see!  Hannah has always been extremely enthusiastic about school!

Grace...Grace is still being Grace!  She loves playing with her older sister.  They play well together. She loves being involved and insists that she needs to help with everything!

This experience in Virginia wouldn't been the same if my family wasn't with me!  They are my joy!

On to PA business!!!

These passed two weeks I have felt the overwhelming power of stress! This is associated mostly with my anatomy class.  It honestly is like trying to drink from a firehose, as previously warned.  One of my buddies reference this stress to the weight applied to a character in the movie, "Crucible."  This character was tried as a witch and his punishment was death via suffocation by rocks.  These rocks were placed upon his chest one by one until he passed.  During such torture this character called out, "More weight, add more weight!"

We began with the abdomen! As mentioned previously, our cadaver's liver is huge.  We then dug through the mess of messentary and organs to free a variety of blood vessels and nerves.  We worked our way down to the pelvis.  I thought for sure we are were going to stop here and just focus upon the disorganized gut!  I was completely wrong!  "More weight!" Not only did we add the pelvis and buttucks, but we added the male and female reproductive sections.  And two days before our test, we are adding some of the lower limb information as well!  As stressful as this is, I feel that I am doing my best in solidifying the information necessary for success.

Okay, now that I have vented a bit!  I would like to explain the laughter we have had during our dissection times.  We first removed the entire gut from the body, took it to the sink and ran water through the intestines.  The purpose of this was to remove the remaining 'Poop'. It's amazing how quickly adults become elementary students!  The jokes began fly through the room.

To add insult to the injury of bad jokes! We of course had to cut open the male and female parts...you know what I mean!  The book encouraged us to slide the cadaver to the edge of the table, so the legs would hang off the end.  Well, these ridged legs didn't exactly hang off.  In fact, they stuck out like two giant poles! We each took turns sitting between these dead legs and cut into his man parts!  Loads of jokes and awkwardness swam throughout the lab. lol!  Our professor even chimed in.

We furthered our dissection by removing one of the legs!  As gross as that sounds, it was actually pretty neat!  As stressful as this bit has been, we have had some great times!

One really cool event was observing the optic disc and fovea in the eye!  During one of our Physical Diagnosis labs, we broke out our new ophthalmoscopes to look into each ours eyes.  We were like kids on Christmas morning!  We have also been practicing how to distinguish cardiac, lung, and abdomen sounds with our stethoscopes!
